The Advanced Computing and e-Science group at the Institute of Physics of Cantabria (IFCA), Santander (Spain), is coordinating and participating in several European initiatives to implement cloud-based services for artificial intelligence, machine learning and data science in the context of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). We are seeking for motivated full-time developers and experts in cloud computing with knowledge on the deployment and operation of distributed computing tools and infrastructures.

For each of the positions we offer an indefinite contract from January 2023. The gross annual salary will start at 30,000 €, according to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) scales and the candidate qualifications. The contract includes all the benefits of the Spanish Public Health and Social Security system. Applications are welcome until the positions are filled.

Infrastructure and distributed computing positions

These positions will deal with the operations, development and integration of the distributed computing and storage services adopted by the projects, following a Cloud computing model. You will be dealing with highly distributed environments over pan-European computing infrastructures.

Our requirements

We are looking for motivated candidates willing to learn new things and technologies. We value experience in the following fields to succeed at this role, but we do not expect that you know all of them:

  • Knowledge of the Jupyter ecosystem (Hub, Lab, Notebooks, etc.).
  • Experience deploying data analytics tools for big data processing (Hadoop, Spark, YARN, HDFS, Delta).
  • Experience working with Docker containers and composition tools.
  • Experience working with and operating Kubernetes Clusters or other container and workload orchestration engines (Hashicorp Nomad).
  • Knowledge on serverless infrastructures and other novel computing models.

However, there are some skills that are mandatory for us:

  • Proficiency working with Linux environments.
  • A good level of skills programming on Python.
  • Curiosity and passion to constantly learn new things. Technology changes fast.
  • Experience working with distributed systems, especially Cloud infrastructures.
  • A master’s degree or other graduate degree in computer science or a related field.
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
  • It is necessary to have team working skills, self-motivation, excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.

Software development positions

We are seeking for candidates to work at the back-end, front-end or full stack developers, working and developing with Python (preferably) to create open APIs, writing specifications and implementing them or developing interactive web portals.

Our requirements

We are looking for motivated candidates willing to learn new things and technologies. We value experience in the following fields to succeed at this role, but we do not expect that you know all of them:

  • Working with APIs in the Python environment: OpenAPI specifications, Swagger UI, FastAPI, aiohttp.
  • Developing interactive front-end applications and interactive web portals.
  • Elixir Phoenix web framework.

However, there are some skills that are mandatory for us:

  • Proficiency working with Linux environments.
  • A good level of skills programming on Python.
  • Curiosity and passion to constantly learn new things. Technology changes fast.
  • A master’s degree or other graduate degree in computer science or a related field.
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.

Common working conditions

  • Candidates will join the Spanish National Research Council, Spain's largest research performing organization.
  • The workplace is the  Institute of Physics of Cantabria (IFCA), located in Santander (northern coast of Spain). We are located at the University of Cantabria campus, in a green environment surrounded by the other schools and faculties.
  • The contracts are for 37.5 hours per week, with 30 natural days of vacation (22 working days) and 8 additional days off per year.
  • The contracts will involve traveling within Europe (2 times per year).
  • For each of the positions we offer an indefinite contract from January 2023.

  • The gross annual salary will start at 30,000€, according to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) scales and the candidate qualifications.

  • The contract includes all the benefits of the Spanish Public Health and Social Security system.

  • Starting date: preferably January/February 2023.
